The challenge

Based in the North East of England, Historic Property Restoration Ltd was formerly a division of English Heritage. With a specialist team of skilled craftspeople, they’re responsible for the restoration and conservation of some of the country's most recognised and prized buildings and monuments, from castles and churches to historical landscapes and more.

With an outdated site in comparison to similar enterprises, they reached out to Land Digital to bring their existing website into the 21st century from both a design and functionality point of view.

Their existing site lacked many of the professional features that would help them to convey to users their level of craftsmanship, professionalism, accreditations and certificates, as well as the amazing restorative projects they’ve conducted across the UK.

The process

The existing website was hosted on an old version of Drupal that offered limited functionality and was difficult to maintain and develop in order to stay current and inline with other brands within their sector.

We took the decision to carry out a complete refresh of their existing website, upgrading it onto open source Drupal software.

The starting point for the redesign was the discovery process. Hosting briefing sessions with the client, we were able to gain a deeper insight into what they wanted to achieve with their site upgrade and establish how to meet these needs with a focus on delivering a digital design service that directly met their key objectives.

The next step was to conduct an in-depth review of their existing site and marry it with their insights to create a blueprint for the new design. The wireframe gave us a clear outline to develop the new site using open source Drupal software that could incorporate essential features such as a ‘Projects’ gallery, ‘Meet the Team’ and ‘Corporate responsibilities that would give them a modern edge in line with other brands in their industry. Throughout this process, we continually reviewed wireframes and designs with the client to ensure we fully met their brief.

The result

Through an in-depth discovery process and digital service design approach, we were able to deliver a contemporary website design that not only looked fresh and modern, but also had a customer-centric design – giving users what they wanted when visiting the site.

Featuring a streamlined navigation, the user experience is far more logical and professional, providing a more sophisticated model to showcase their important conservation work on historic buildings and monuments throughout the UK.

In addition, the open source Drupal software has delivered an improved backend functionality, allowing the client to easily manage and update the site with new content as and when required.
